Karindundu Factory lies in the lowlands of Mount Kenya, just beyond Karatina in Nyeri County. Here, 513 smallholder farmers tend small plots of coffee—about 300 trees each—alongside macadamia, banana, maize, and beans, shaping a landscape rooted in both livelihood and tradition.
At elevations between 1,700 and 1,900 meters, cool air slows the ripening of coffee cherries, allowing sugars and complexity to deepen over time. In the region’s rich red volcanic soils and steady rainfall, the conditions are near ideal, yielding coffees defined by clarity, brightness, and layered sweetness.
Under the Barichu Cooperative Society, these individual harvests come together with care and consistency. The cooperative ensures quality processing, fair payment, and ongoing farmer support—creating not only traceability for buyers, but stability for the community.
Sustainability and social progress are part of this foundation. Organic practices are encouraged, waste is thoughtfully managed, and efforts toward gender equity continue to strengthen participation across the cooperative.
Grown primarily from SL28 and SL34 varieties, Karindundu’s coffees express a classic Kenyan profile: vibrant, structured, and quietly complex—a reflection of both place and the people who cultivate it.
