Preface (n)
An introduction to a book, typically stating its subject, scope, or aims.
Subject
Preface is, first and foremost, a specialty coffee roastery anchored in the knowledge that coffee is a fruit; an agricultural product comprising myriad varieties and cultivars, influenced by farming techniques and processing methods, and affected by climate and altitude.
This is another way of saying that coffee is a complex fruit, and because of its complexity, coffee can express itself across a range of flavor profiles – from chocolate and nuts to fruity and floral, and, sometimes, chocolate-covered fruit!
Our subject, then, is coffee.
Scope
We are passionate about the stories that form the fabric of the coffee industry, from bean to cup.
In essence, a preface is an introduction to a book. More specifically, it’s an introduction that better positions the reader to understand the author’s intent. It achieves this by offering ways to understand the book’s key concepts, or the context out of which the book emerged, or a case for why such a book remains relevant to us if it was first published many years ago.
Our scope, then, is to give you the resources to better navigate the industry’s terminology and walk alongside you as you work out your own coffee preferences. Our Appendix will be updated with simple and helpful information about processing methods, flavor notes, and brewing guides as we grow.
Aim
We roast our coffees in a way that lets their unique characteristics stand out. In particular, we roast them in ways that we enjoy drinking them.
Time and energy is devoted to each of our coffees, giving them the individual treatment they need to taste their best. Some coffees shine better with a lighter roast, and others a little closer to medium. Again, what’s important to us is that we enjoy their company.
Our aim, in all instances, is to roast coffees that make you take note; whether it be for its dependability to start your day, or for its unique flavors.
